Aly Young is surprised and thrilled in equal measure to have been nominated for a Bertha Cave Award. Bertha was quite a gal. In 1903 she applied to become the first female member of the Inns of Court. When rejected she appealed to the House of Lords and again was unsuccessful. She campaigned alongside Christabel Pankhurst, who was the daughter of Emmeline Pankhurst, for equal rights. It took until May 1922 for a woman to be called to the English Bar. And that was only 100 years ago.
